Dr. Muhammad Ali Versiani, Born on 12th June 1972, in Karachi, Sindh. He did his master in organic chemistry in the year of 1996 from the Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi and then joined HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry in April 1997. He started his research as a junior research scholar under the guidance of Professor Dr. Shaheen Faizi S.I.
He has been appointed as a Lecturer (Chemistry) in Federal Urdu University of Arts, Sciences and Technology Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Science campus, University Road, Karachi (Former Federal Govt. Urdu Science College) in September 2002, then promoted as an Assistant Professor and Associate professor in the year of 2005 and 2013 respectively. The title of his Ph.D. work was study in the chemical constituents of Bombax ceiba and Cuscuta reflexa.
He is engaged in Natural Product and Synthetic Chemistry, and obtained a number of biologically active compounds. The work has resulted in the publication of fifty six (56) International research papers, the impact factor of which is ~98.00; six (06) patents and two (02) volumes of text book. He received Best Achievement Award for the year 1998-1999 from Young Chemist Council, Chemical Society of Pakistan.
As a co-supervisor ten (10) student has completed her Ph.D. under his supervision while three (03) Ph.D., three (03) M. Phil and one (01) BS students are doing their research under his guidance while forty six two (46) students have been completed their thesis. He is also teaching Ph. D, .MS./M. Phil., M. Sc. and BS. students. He has served as an In-charge M. Phil/ Ph.D. program from May 2006 to Nov. 2009.
He won the Post doc. Scholarship from higher education commission (HEC) in the year of 2008 and got an opportunity to do research at Centre for Cancer Research (CCR), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institute of Health (NIH), Frederick, Maryland, USA, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Kirk R. Gustafson on the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Govt. of Pakistan, Post Doctoral Fellowship Program – Phase II, Batch II, 2007- 2008. CCR is home to more than 250 scientists and clinicians working in intramural research at National Cancer Institute (NCI). CCR is organized into over 50 branches and laboratories, each one grouping scientists with complementary interests. The investigators of CCR are basic, clinical, and translational scientists who work together to advance the knowledge of CANCER and AIDS and to develop new therapies against these diseases and he was provided the ample guidance by these world-class scientists. During his post-doctoral program he has learnt the new techniques and new experimental methods for the development of new therapeutic agents as well as bioassay activity methods. This program provides him an opportunity to not only to exchange information about new trends and techniques but also to utilize latest experimental facilities like Varian Innova-500 MHz NMR instrument to run 1-D-NMR (1H-NMR and NOE), 2D-NMR (COSY, HMBC and HMQC) experiments, LCMS, Varian 50 BIO UV-visible spectrophotometer for UV, Perkin-Elmer 241 Polarimeter for optical rotations, Jasco J 720 spectrophotometer for CD measurements, Varian prep star HPLC apparatus equipped with UV-VIS detector using reverse and normal phase column under gradient to isocratic condition used for the purifications of compounds, which he may not have access, and as a result the interest of the research increases towards new directions.
At the current stage he has engaged on a project about the active plants and synthetic research with number of students and trying to get the bioactive phytochemicals and synthetic chemical constituents by using the new trends and techniques. Since Federal Urdu University is a newly established University and had no sufficient research and laboratory facilities so before going to post doctoral research he has submitted a PC-I for up-gradation of Department of Chemistry and two research laboratories to Higher Education Commission (Project cost Rs. 37.313 millions, 2009-2012, Completed 2012) and after approval of project also served as a project director with all academic responsibilities. He has also got Research and Development (R&D) Project from Higher Education Commission (Project cost, 6.9184 millions, Approved, 2010-2013) for the exploration of new natural and synthetic medicinally important compounds by utilizing the new trends and techniques.
