Chungming Chang

I am a veterinarian; I hold a position as an assistant professor in colleague of medicine at Chang Gung University. I obtained my bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Veterinary Medicine from National Taiwan University. I have another master’s degree in Veterinary Clinical Medicine specialized in avian pathology from Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort, France. I received my PhD in Animal Genetics from the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon in France. Before joining Chang Gung University, I was a researcher at French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and at Pasteur Institute, Paris, where I received my training to work in biosafety level 3 laboratories (P3), and I was in charge of a research program on influenza viruses in wild birds. The Research Center for Emerging Viral Infections which contains several biosafety level 2 laboratories (P2 plus) at Chang Gung University was designed by me due to my experiences from Pasteur Institute. My major research areas are: emerging and re-emerging viral infections, genomics, molecular genetics, and zoonotic diseases. One of my research interests is influenza, both in human and animals, especially on ecological and epidemiological studies; another interest is the study of human endogenous retroviruses which could be associated with some autoimmune and cancer diseases. I have been instrumental in setting collaborative research programs between Chang-Gung University and French partners. During Jan 2010 to Dec 2012, I was the project leader of a Taiwan-Czech bilateral research project on human endogenous retrovirus and cancers study using the high throughput sequencing technology and bioinformatics approaches. I was the co-investigator of the Health National Contact Point, Taiwan, of EU Framework Programme from 2011 to June 2013. From 2014 to 2016, I am the co-investigator of a French-Taiwan ANR project on autoimmune disease research using a novel mouse strain. I have a very broad international contact network especially with European countries because I speak fluently both French and English. I have published several research articles in genomics, genetics and also a serial of publications of development of rapid molecular diagnostic tests for different virus infections. From 2019 August, I am the Chief Executive Officer at Chang Gung university of the Global Research & Industry Alliance (GLORIA), Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan. Outside the laboratory and the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling and tasting Taiwan and French cuisine.
