CV SUMMARY of last 10 years only
Doctor in Industrial engineering by the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) since January 25th 2002, and Full Professor with 3 research periods (one more applied this year), 1 transfer recognition (April 15th 2020) and 4 teaching periods. The research activity in the last 10 years is summarized below:
• PhD direction: 5 (3 of them international thesis)
• Public-funded research projects as IP: 10 (642,233.7 Euros).
• Public-funded research projects participation: 15 (1,178,468.7 euros),
• Private-funded research projects as IP: 12 (500,025.3 euros),
• h index: 24.
• Cites: 1452. Cites per year in the last 10 years: 132,5 (SCOPUS)
• Papers in indexed journals: 58.
• Papers in Q1: 37 (all of them in D1)
• Book chapters: 3.
• Contributions in international conferences: 60
To value appropriately this objective data, it is necessary to consider the ability to initiate a research line and form a group with great activity and repercussion national and international-wide. The following aspects support it:
Creation and leadership of a research group:
There is great coherence in the followed trajectory, with a predominant research line on thermoelectrics, which began with the Ph degree, which was the second one defended on this topic in Spain. When Professor Astrain joined the UPNA Department of Mechanical Engineering, there were no consolidated lines of research. It was with his Ph degree that the research on thermoelectrics began in this university, which has forced him to carry out an intense work in research, coordination, and management, aimed to form a research group.
In this sense, it should be noted that since 2012, when he assumed the coordination of the research group in Thermal and Fluid Engineering (ITF), the groups has increased from 5 members with only 1 PhD candidate to 16 members at present with 8 of them are doctors and 5 are doing their doctoral thesis. In addition, the evaluation of the ANEP of the ITF group has improved from 67 points (out of 100) in 2012, to 85 points achieved in the last evaluation of 2018, with the qualification of National Excellence.
Training of young researchers in the last 10 years
Director of 5 PhD thesis that obtained a qualification of Excellent “cum laude” at the UPNA, three of them with international distinction. At this moment, he is co-supervising 5 more PhDs.
He has obtained 2 FPI scholarship holders (BES-2012-056647, BES-2015-073878) and 1 FPU scholarship holder (FPU16-05203), whom he has trained as doctors, and now they are part of his research group, being teachers at UPNA.
He is currently in charge of a predoctoral fellow from the Government of Navarra, who also belongs to his research group. In addition, he is the co-director of 2 more doctoral students, within the Government of Navarra Industrial Doctorate program, carrying out his activity at the National Center for Renewable Energies of the CIEMAT Foundation.
Financing obtained in competitive projects in the last 10 years
Since 2012, he has participated in 15 competitive public-funded projects, in 10 of them being the principal investigator, raising 642,233.7 euros. Four of these projects come from calls by the State Research Plan, 3 from “Retos investigación” and 1 from “Retos Colaboración con empresa”, being the IP in all of them. The remaining 11 projects come from the regional calls of the Government of Navarra.
Research dissemination in the last 10 years
A total of 58 articles in indexed international journals are present (37 in the 1st decile of the JCR), 3 book chapters and 60 contributions in international conferences (2 plenary conferences). He has received 1,452 citations, with an annual citations average of 208 (calculated over the last 5 years), for an h-index of 24.
In 2002, he was the Secretary of the 7th European Workshop on Thermoelectrics, and in 2021 President of the X Iberian Congress and VIII Ibero-American Congress of Cold Sciences and Techniques, both held at UPNA. He is currently the Technical Director of the Chair of Renewable Energies since January 2010 and a member of the scientific committee of the Association of Cold Sciences and Techniques since 2009.
Technological transfer derived from his research in the last 10 years
In the last 10 years David Astrain has been principal investigator of 12 contracts, for a total amount of 500,025.3 euros with important companies such as: Bosch-Siemens, Azcoyen Industrial, Acciona Energía, Ingeteam, Siemens-Gamesa, Liebherr and Exkal. These projects have had an important character of innovation, development, and technology transfer to the productive sector. In this sense, he is inventor of 6 patents (3 of them international and 3 national), of which 5 are owned by the multinational BOSCH-SIEMENS.
