Prof. Zheng has received several science awards, including the Chinese National Natural Science Award honored by the Chinese Government in 1991, the Best Theory Paper Award honored at the 5th World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation in 2004, and the Outstanding Paper Award honored at the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Electro/Information Technology in 2012. In November 2013 he was elected as IEEE Fellow for contributions to signal processing and system identification. He was named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters) in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, consecutively.
