Research: I have run an independant research group for over 25 years with the majority of projects enjoying industrial collaboration. Current areas of research activity include (i) novel synthetic routes to important heterocyclic 'building blocks' (pyridines, terpyridines, imidazoles etc), (ii) synthesis of novel enzymatic substrates for the detection and identification of pathogenic bacteria, (iii) nitro-aromatic pro-drugs for anti-cancer studies, (iv) synthesis and application of novel polythiophene derivatives. Teaching: I have been the course leader at various times for HNC chemistry, BSc/MChem chemistry and MRes courses. As such I have been involved with the planning, validation, quality control and day-to-day running of these courses.
