Bio
Ahmed Nabil Belbachir (M’05) was awarded a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, Austria, in 2005. He also received the Master degree in Signal Processing, in 2000 and the Engineering degree in electronics in 1996 both from the University of Science and Technology in Oran, Algeria. Currently he is the research director at NORCE Norwegian Centre, Member of the Board of Directors at euRobotics AiSBL and a member of the IEEE steering committee in embedded vision. From 2000 to 2006, he was involved in the ESA-Herschel infrared observatory project “PACS” in research and development of the image compression software for the infrared instrument PACS and resulting in the book “On-board Processing for Infrared Observatories – Theory and Application” in 2008. From 2006 -2014, he was a senior scientist at AIT (Austria) with the focus on bio-inspired sensing and computer vision. Among others, he co-invented the bio-inspired 360° panoramic 3D camera for robotics and coordinated several national and European projects. He is the editor of the book Smart Cameras with Springer, which was published in English in 2009 and translated into Chinese by China Machine Press in 2014. Dr. Belbachir is a certified project manager level C from IPMA and serves as an expert evaluator for EU proposals. His research interests include smart sensors, real-time systems, computational intelligence and 3D vision. He has about 100 scientific publications and 4 granted patents. He organized the 5th -8th IEEE Embedded Vision Workshops from 2009 till 2012 and 2020 as a general chair in conjunction with CVPR. He is also organizing the yearly Machine Learning and Vision Summer School for Industrial Applications (MALVIC). His research interests include pattern analysis, computer vision, machine learning, computational intelligence and real-time systems.
