Bio
Tim LaClair is a Distinguished R&D Engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). His research specialties include thermal energy storage (TES), building energy systems, heat transfer, boiling and two-phase flow, thermal-fluid sciences, vehicle fuel efficiency and performance modeling, Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), and electric vehicles. His research combines experimental measurement with computer modeling and analysis of data. Dr. LaClair’s most recent research has focused on TES systems and their integration with advanced HVAC equipment. He has also been active in RD&D for CAVs technologies aimed at improving fuel efficiency, as well as research of other vehicle efficiency and safety technologies.
Before joining NREL in 2022, he was Senior R&D Staff at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for 13 years, where he also conducted TES and Transportation research, and he served as the group leader for Vehicle Connectivity & Autonomy Research for two years. Prior to employment in the U.S. National Laboratories, he worked as Lead Tire Performance Engineer at Michelin Tire Corporation in Greenville, South Carolina and Clermont-Ferrand, France for nine years, with specific expertise in tire rolling resistance and wear, and prior to this as a Spacecraft Thermal Management Engineer at the US Air Force Research Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
