Bio
Griffiths has published extensively in the area of e-mental health investigating the effectiveness of online programs for preventing & treating mental illness, the nature and effectiveness of online mental health support groups & methods for assessing the quality of mental health internet information sites. Together with Prof Helen Christensen, Griffiths pioneered the development of online automated self help therapy for depression. At the time of her retirement one of these programs (MoodGYM) had been delivered to over 1 million registrants from 222 nation states and was available in several languages. These programs have recently been commercialised by ehubhealth along with an online mental health workplace induction program (MH-Guru) and a consumer depression information website (blupages.anu.edu.au) conceived and developed by Griffiths.
Griffiths has also undertaken extensive studies on the stigma associated with mental illness, including the first study of rates of such stigma in the Australian population and the factors which predict stigma associated with mental illness. Further, she developed and investigated the effectiveness of programs designed to reduce public stigma. To this end she developed a series of measures of mental health lstigma, one of which, the Depression Stigma Scale has been translated into at least 15 languages.
Other research has included the investigation of consumer priorities for mental health research, consumer information needs and mental health literacy, the role antidepressants in aviation safety and the effectiveness of clozapine for treatment refractory schizophrenia.
Griffiths continues to engage in research, is engaged in a number international collaborations, and sits on national and international advisory boards.
