P. Komarek

Peter Komarek received the Ph.D. degree in technical physics from the University of Technology Vienna, Austria, in 1966. He started his career at the German Research Center, Jülich, with work on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy conversion and cryogenics for power engineering. This brought him to applied superconductivity. In 1973, he became Section Head and, in 1986, Director of the Institute for Technical Physics at the Research Center, Karlsruhe, Germany. His institute is the largest one in Europe for research on large-scale applications of superconductivity. He is also an Honorary Professor of the University of Karlsruhe, Karlsruhe, and the University of Technology, Graz, Austria. For many years he was the European editor for the journals Cryogenics and Fusion Engineering and Design. Prof. Komarek is a Member of many scientific societies, including the German and Austrian Physical Societies, the German Society for Engineers, and others. He received the IEEE award for applied superconductivity in 2001.
