Career Trajectory
Bio
I work in the Surrey Sleep Research Centre at the University of Surrey in the UK, and lead the Brain and Behaviour Lab. In my group we study the biology of neruopsychiatric, neurodevelopmental, and neurodegenerative disorders, and I have published more than 85 peer reviewed articles, chapters and scholarly reviews in this area, encompassing work on compulsive behaviour in a variety of species, from fish, to farm animals to humans.
My group use zebrafish as a model species in order to understand the biology of neuropsychiatric, neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, concentrating on the interaction between molecular (genetic/epigenetic) and environmental (e.g., alcohol, stress) factors involved, and the associated neural circuits. Our approach is theoretically guided by the principles of precision medicine, i.e., that understanding the biology of these conditions will help develop individualised treatments for patients. We also carry out preclinical/translational research in humans, in particular looking at the interactions of impulsivity, risk-taking (personality) and (environmental) stress on alcohol use and misuse.
