Mario Rudiger

Mario Rüdiger is head of the Department for Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine at the Children’s Clinic of the University Hospital Carl Gustav Carus in Dresden, Germany and father of two daughters. He was trained as a Pediatrician and Neonatologist at the University Hospital Charité, Berlin. During that time he also started his scientific career mainly on the field of lung injury in preterm newborns. After 10 years in Berlin he moved to Austria, where he worked as a Consultant at the Clinic for Neonatology at the University Hospital in Innsbruck between 2004 and 2008. Beside his clinical work he was the head of the pulmonary research group. In 2008 Mario Rüdiger became Professor for Pediatrics and Head of department in the University Hospital Dresden. His clinical and scientific expertise covers mainly the following three topics: prevention of chronic lung disease in preterm infants, delivery room management and neuro-psychological developmental. Accordingly, his lab is involved in international collaborations to bring regenerative therapies into clinical neonatal care. The clinical research group focuses on improving delivery room management; as PI he was responsible for the multicenter, international Trial to Evaluate a Specified Type of APGAR (TEST-APGAR). To improve the neuro-psychological development of preterm infants he developed the “FamilieNetz” – pilot-project to support families of preterm infants and is currently PI of the international ALBINO-study. His research is supported by different grants, including a 1 Mill. € grant to bring MSC-based therapy into clinical care and a 5 Mill. € grant to evaluate an evidence-based care-path for IUGR-infants. His scientific work was honored by different awards, such as the CaPaNi-Award for Neonatal Lunge research, the Bengt-Robertson-Award and the German Broadcasting Charity-Award “Goldene Henne”.
