Akira Ishibashi (M'91–SM'97) received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in physics and the Ph.D. degree, from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1981, 1983, and 1990, respectively
He joined High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), Tsukuba, Ibaraki, Japan, where he was part of a research program searching neutrino mass. During 1982–1983, he was a Research Assistant at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA, for electron–positron colliding beam physics. In 1983, he joined the Research Center of Sony Corporation, Yokohama, Japan, where he studied electrons, photons, and their interactions in AlAs–GaAs ultrathin-layer superlattices as part of his graduate work. He was a Visiting Faculty Member at Loomis Laboratory, Department of Physics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, during 1990–1991, where he studied GaAs-based nanostructures. He then returned to Japan where, after developing low-noise AlGaInP red-emitting laser diodes, he was engaged in physics and the development of ZnMgSSe-based blue/green laser diodes with lifetime of 500 hours. He was a Visiting Professor at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Tohoku University, Sendai, Miyagi, Japan, in 1998. He is now Head of the Quantum Photon Delivery Laboratory, Frontier Science Laboratories, Sony Corporation, Yokohama, Japan. He has published more than 100 conference and journal papers.
Dr. Ishibashi has been invited to give talks at several conferences, including the International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors, International Semiconductor Laser Conference, and the International Conference on II–VI Compunds and Devices. He is a member of SPIE, the Physical Society of Japan, and Japan Applied Physical Society.
