•A novel sea urchin-like γ-AlOOH/Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic composite nanosorbent has been manufactured.•The γ-AlOOH/Fe3O4@SiO2 with hierarchical structure has a smaller average particle size and better dispersion.•The γ-AlOOH/Fe3O4@SiO2 exhibited excellent adsorption properties for Congo red.•The γ-AlOOH/Fe3O4@SiO2 show exceptional recovery and recycling performance.
