Density vs. Cover: Which is the better choice as the proxy for plant community species diversity estimated by spectral indexes?

•The predictive ability of spectral indexes to species diversity indexes was stronger and more robust by considering species cover.•Commonly used species diversity indexes cannot represent the overall situation of community species diversity.•We inferred Hill numbers under which q values can be better indicated by spectral indexes in different density-cover relationships communities.
