Abstract
The major power grid infrastructures in the world are operated near to steady state point, which can easily embark on critical situations and frequent occurrence of cascading failure that has eroded the reliability of the electrical grid. This led to the importance of special protection schemes and islanding schemes in modern power systems to safeguard the important sector and minimize losses. The highly dynamic nature of the grid is not reliable with the current islanding scheme which has led to recent failures. The current islanding schemes are failing to prevent highly dynamic modern grid infrastructures. This motivates us to propose a hybrid islanding scheme to avoid such failures. In this paper, a hybrid islanding scheme is constructed on a combination of under frequency, over frequency, and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). The proposed strategy is to combine several passive detection methods to create a shorter non-detection zone (NDZ) and shorten the detection time. This is a simple control strategy to implement on the Mumbai network. EMT simulations were performed on the network using HYPERSIM. Simulations were run to analyze the hybrid scheme for sudden load changes and faulty conditions, as well as the importance of load trimming. The hybrid islanding scheme helps to isolate and avoid cascading failure. The proposed hybrid islanding scheme was performed on the Mumbai network.
