Implications and quantifications of marijuana use regarding neonatal outcomes

•More and urgent attention is required to determine the effect on newborns’ health from marijuana use during pregnancy.•Recently, more widespread cannabis legalization has supported a perception of less risk of harm, however research into its effects on newborns is still lacking.•More study quantifying the dose-effect relationship of marijuana in pregnant women and potential implications for their offspring is needed.•Longer-term and follow-up studies are required to reduce confounding socio-environmental factors that limit current studies related to marijuana use.•Cessation of marijuana use currently provides the least risk and highest safety profile for mothers and their infants.
