Invasive Neural Integration and Clinical Translation

Remarkable progress has been made in the field of neural integration. However, the advances that have been made in the laboratory have largely failed to translate into improved patient care. This chapter provides a review of the current state-of-the-art invasive neural integration technology and its clinical applications. We also elucidate some of the most challenging barriers to invasive human-machine interfacing. Lastly, in the hopes that our readers will invent solutions that overcome these barriers, we explore a generalized roadmap for translation of inventions within an academic environment, from ideation to commercialization exit strategies. By the end of this chapter the authors hope that the reader will have a better understanding of existing and emerging technologies, the more prominent limitations that have yet to be overcome, and how an innovator might advance their invention toward widespread commercial implementation.
