Opportunities and challenges in algal biofuel

The research and algal biofuel production have been gaining attention due to the fossil fuel scarce and their respective environmental impacts. The algae biomass accumulates large amounts of oil and can be a suitable feedstock source for biofuel production. The purpose of this chapter is to show the opportunities and challenges in algal biofuel. The economic, environmental, and social challenges and opportunities for algal biomass production (micro- and macroalgae) and biomass production in wastewater with bioelectricity generation will be discussed. A general overview of the biofuel potentiality from algal biomass was approached. Also, it presents and discusses the challenges and potential of producing renewable energy from algae to reduce environmental impacts.
