•Fish otoliths as a tool to reveal the coastal fish diversity in prehistoric Taiwan.•Otoliths of the large yellow croaker were abundant in the Early Neolithic of Taiwan.•Change in fish consumption was due to geomorphological shift instead of overfishing.
