Abstract
•During 2007–2019, 23,213 distressed firms were rescued by acquisition in 17 European emerging markets.•This paper shows that the institutional quality is linked with lower probability of distressed acquisitions.•The effect of institutions increased after the financial crisis but declined as the economic situation improved.
