Shell offset enhances mechanical and energy absorption properties of SLM-made lattices with controllable separated voids

•The novel method of shell offset greatly improves the mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity.•Gyroid with shell offset is an excellent feature to control spatial volume fraction of TPMS sheet lattices with constant mechanical properties.•Manufacturing deviations of SLM detected by CT were taken into simulation models to determine the mechanism of performance improvement.
