Interzeolite transformation has been used toproduce a novel family of hierarchical catalysts featuring excellenttextural properties, strong acidity, and superior catalytic perform-ance for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole with benzhydrol,the Claisen-Schmidt condensation of benzaldehyde and hydroxy-acetophenone, and the cracking of polystyrene. Intermediate solidsof the FAU interzeolite transformation into BEA display bothincreased accessibility & xe0d5;due to the development of mesoporos-ity & xe0d5;and strong acidity & xe0d5;caused by the presence of ultrasmallcrystals or zeolitic fragments in their structure. The use ofsurfactants allows for the development of the hierarchical catalystswith very narrow pore size distribution. The properties ofinterzeolite transformation intermediates (ITIs) can befine-tuned simply by stopping the interconversion at different times.
