Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of heavy ions conformal therapy in treatment of head and neck cancer with medical imaging such as B-mode ultrasonic diagnostic equipment,X-ray simulated positioner and CT.Methods The effectiveness of 27 patients with head and neck cancer during November 2006 and July 2011 treated with heavy ion beam radiotherapy by different medical imaging were compared before radiotherapy and after treatment so as to learn the localization and impact factors of accuracy by the therapy. Results Ultrasonography,X-ray simulated positioner and CT scanning played important roles in the radiotherapy localization. The use of ultrasonography was convenient for confirming the locations of superficial lamella tumors and much better than that by X-ray simulated positioner;CT was more accurate for locating the deep tumors, confirming the target area and making the radiotherapy plan than those by ultrasonography or simulated positioner. Conclusion It is necessary to use medical imaging such as B-mode ultrasonic diagnostic equipment,X-ray simulated positioner and CT to confirm the radiotherapy target area and observe the clinical efficacy.Ultrasonography is economical and simple which can be widely used in superficial lamella tumors;CT can show clear images which may be utilized in conformal radiotherapy for making radiotherapy plan.It is important in heavy ions conformal therapy to jointly use B-mode ultrasonic diagnostic equipment,X-ray simulated positioner and CT.
