Abstract
Introduction: The oil spill form the Hebei Spirit 12,547kl in December 2007 contaminated Taean in Korea. We analyzed the difference in DNA damage using the Micronucleus test of residents 5 years after the Hebei Spirit oil spill. Methods: Follow-up studies were undertaken in 1 year, 3 years and 5 years after the accident in residents who live in highly exposed areas. . The high-exposed residents were classified according to clean-up participation. A total of 175, 100, 100 participants were enrolled in Feb to Apr, 2009, Oct to Nov, 2010, and Feb to Mar, 2012, respectively. Micronucleus test (MN test) was carried out as indicator of DNA damage using obtained peripheral blood samples. We performed the possible influence of genotype analysis (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1-105, CYP1B1-432, EPHX1-113, EPHX1-139, XPD-751, XRCC1-194, XRCC1-399 and XRCC3-241). Results: There was no difference in MN test by sex from the first survey to the third survey. Age was influenced significantly in Mn test the second and third survey ( p=0.0075, p=0.0011). GSTM1 null was influenced significantly in MN test the first and second survey (p=0.007, p=0.035), but not the third survey (p=0.18). GSTT1 null was significantly influenced in MN test (p=0.064) in the second survey. Cleanup participants showed less MN test frequency then no participants but not significant all surveys (p=0.20, p=0.27 and p=0.36). No differences in MN test after adjusted age, sex, income and GSTM1, GSTT1. Conclusion: Age, GSTM1 null and GSTT1 null were risk factor of DNA damage. But there was no difference by days of working on clean-up job.
