•Smad1/5/9 immunoreactivity increased in CA1 astrocytes after ischemia.•Phospho-Smad1/5/9-immunopositive cell number transiently increased after ischemia.•Immunoreactivity for phospho-Smad1/5/9 was found in GFAP-immunopositive astrocytes.•The expression level of TGF-β1 mRNA increased in the hippocampus after ischemia.•SB525334 prevented ischemia-induced increase in phospho-Smad1/5/9-positive cells.
