Abstract
•CREATE pedagogy offers a means for teaching and learning science through the primary literature of a scientific discipline.•In CREATE courses, students apply evidenced-based tools such as concept mapping, drawing, and annotation in deconstructing published research.•Studies of CREATE implementations supports Its efficacy in a variety of science courses with diverse student populations.•In this review, we describe a case-study of CREATE in an upper-level science course, which provides a “how-to” perspective on its use.
