A high concentration of sevoflurane induces gasping breaths in mice

•Severe hypoxia under a light level of sevoflurane anesthesia triggered gasping in mice.•The identical gasping was elicited by administration of a high concentration of sevoflurane.•Neither mild hypoxia nor moderate sevoflurane anesthesia elicited gasping whereas the combination of both stresses elicited gasping.
