•A series of green and sustainable DESs have been successfully prepared.•The extraction of phenolic compounds was efficiently performed by DES-MAE.•DES-MAE process was optimized by response surface methodology.•The extraction kinetics of DES-MAE process was comprehensively investigated.•The recovered DES still exhibited a good solvent effect.
