TR17 Ready to rollout: introducing a new video recording and analysis tool to a large simulation centre

Since the early 1990s, video analysis has been an important part in sports coaching, training and talent development. The power of video as an objective analysis tool has more recently been applied to healthcare settings, allowing learners and instructors to review and assess performance. This short communication describes the introduction of a new video capture and feedback system to both undergraduate, and postgraduate, teaching and learning at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). Prior to the introduction of this solution, the use of video had been limited in RCSI due to time and budget constraints. Alongside the new hardware and software, a comprehensive policy was developed to provide a set of standard roles, responsibilities and naming conventions for all users of the site. Courses which had previously been using video review in any format were given first preference for use of the new system. Other courses wishing to stream or record video were also facilitated. In order to ensure a high-quality user experience, system features were rolled out gradually, with extensive piloting and testing of any feature before its wider use could be supported. The new, all-in-one system has streamlined the video review process, making it more accessible to both tutors and students. Existing video feedback processes were improved, and new course formats were developed around the system.
