Lateral impact tests on FH32 grade steel stiffened plates at room and sub-zero temperatures

•At low temperature strain hardening of FH32 increases.•Permanent set of stiffened plates decreased with decreasing temperature.•The test models showed no ductile or brittle fracture at −60°C.•Accuracy of FEA depends on the inclusion of strain rate effects.
