•CeO2/g-C3N4 (xCeO/CN) composites fabricated via wet-chemical method.•Charge carriers separation in the composites is significantly enhanced.•Visible-light activity for 2,4-DCP degradation is remarkably improved.•The OH are the predominant oxidants involved in the degradation of 2,4-DCP.•The 2,4-DCP degradation pathway is proposed based on LC–MS intermediates.
