Assessment of the photocatalytic transformation of pyridinium-based ionic liquids in water.

•Pyridinium-based Ionic liquids were studied under photocatalytic treatment.•The effect of side chain length, ion and the type of substituents was analysed.•We evaluate the mineralization extent, the acute toxicity and the transformation mechanism.•The type of inorganic ion deeply affected the transformation pathways and the extent of mineralization.
