Surgical treatment of odontoid fractures: a review

Cervical spine fractures are the most common traumatic spine injuries. Odontoid fractures represent 25% of these injuries. The optimal treatment for odontoid fractures remains controversial. The authors review the literature regarding the nonsurgical and surgical management of odontoid fractures. The risks, benefits, and outcomes of the various treatments for odontoid fractures are discussed.
