Validity and limitation of analytical models for the bending stress of a helical wire in unbonded flexible pipes

•Seven analytical models for the bending stress of a helical wire were summarized.•We developed a 3D finite element model to investigate the seven models.•The validity and limitation of these models for different parameters were discussed.•The analytical model based on spring theory is recommended.
