Proposal and evaluation of subordinate standard solar irradiance spectra for applications in solar energy systems

•A concept for additional (subordinate) standard spectra is proposed.•Tests show applicability for global tilted irradiance spectra.•Subordinate spectra can help to reduce the spectral error by various percent.•For direct normal irradiance the tested set of additional spectra is not useful.
