Electromagnetic forming in pulsed high magnetic field

Electromagnetic forming (EMF) is a high speed forming technology driven by pulsed electromagnetic force. To improve the processing capability of EMF, a high strength driving coil was developed with the design theory and optimization technology of pulsed high magnetic field in this paper, whose peak field reached 40 Tesla. With the driving coil, a high field electromagnetic forming prototype was built in Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center. The high strength driving coil increases the electromagnetic pressure and the ability to form the 2 mm to 8mm thickness workpiece from a series of electromagnetic forming experiments. It is indicated that the improved processing capability of EMF is lied in the high strength driving coil and the EMF would be an effective technology in metal processing industry.
