•A novel Ga2O3-rich oxyfluoride glass applying in IR optical devices is developed.•The glass stability regulated by Y2O3 is demonstrated successfully.•The Ga2O3-rich oxyfluoride gallate glass with best stability contains 6 mol% Y2O3.•The crystal growth mechanism of Ga2O3-rich glasses are determined.
