The Dense Z-Pinch As A Fusion-Reactor - A 1st Technical Appraisal
FUSION ENGINEERING AND DESIGN(1989)
Abstract
Abstract This paper presents further results of an initial technical appraisal of the dense Z-pinch as a fusion reactor. The overall study has included plasma parameters, electrode heating and erosion, pressure vessel damage, tritium breeding, pulsed power supply and energy recovery, reactor energetics, reactor configurations and economic aspects of compact reactors. The general requirements and operating conditions for a DZP reactor were identified. Here, attention is directed to specific technology problems. Pulsed power and other electrical aspects are discussed; saturable inductor magnetic switches are envisaged, in combination with water-line elements to obtain the required short current pulses. Simulations of circuits which have been devised indicate that recovery of stored energy is possible in principle. Reactor energetics are discussed.
