摘要
Florence is a 61-year-old African American woman with six grown children and very little money. She was widowed 4 years ago and has been uninsured ever since. When site thought size might be sick because of changes in her bowel habits, she put off going to the doctor for a year because site knew she could not afford the medical bills. By the time she did see a doctor, her cancer had spread from her colon to her liver Although size had surgery, she declined to have chemotherapy due to the costs. She decided to put her faith in God and died within the year. If Florence had had health insurance, preventive screenings via a colonoscopy might have discovered the cancer earlier and saved her life. Being uninsured is a disparity by itself limiting the access of timely care as well as receiving the current standard of care.
