The meeting of the Police and Public Safety Committee was called to order at 9:35 p.m.by Chairman Terry Mest. Committee members present in addition to Mr. Mest, were Patrick Maloney, and ex-officio member Frank Deery. Lori Carnes was absent

The Chief requested authorization to proceed with a promotional test for the position of Corporal. The Corporal position has been vacant since the resignation of Corporal Shup in May of 2008. Following discussion and explanation of the procedure, the committee agreed to place this matter on the agenda of the February 2 nd meeting of Council. The Chief reviewed with the members a Deferred Retirement Option Program. This would allow an officer eligible for retirement to continue to work beyond his retirement date and remain employed for a specified period of time, which is generally between three to five years. The Chief provided the committee with an overview of the program, which they will review prior to the next meeting of the committee. The Chief noted that the BBB Comin Out of Hibernation event is scheduled for April 18 th . The BBB is requesting the closing of East Philadelphia Avenue from Chestnut Street to Washington Street. The hours are 11:00 to 3:00. The committee agreed to list this matter on the agenda of the February 2 nd meeting of Council.
