Advancing Knowledge Discoveries in Criminal Investigations with Semantic Textual Similarity

Criminal investigators, faced with the complexity of knowledge discovery in major cases, can benefit from integrating information retrieval and natural language processing in their workflow. We explore the application of pre-trained sentence embeddings for clustering and semantic search, presenting promising results. Evaluating over 3,700 Norwegian police reports from high-profile cases; we find that sentence embeddings enhance information retrieval speed and reveal previously unnoticed data, offering valuable insights for future applications in the field of criminal investigations.
