•The consequences of chronic hepatitis C may depend on the effect of several factors.•53% of patients with chronic hepatitis C had hepatic steatosis.•The -164T/C and -493G/T polymorphisms in the MTTP gene showed a combined effect on steatosis.•This combined effect may increase the chance of presenting steatosis by 12.83 times.
