•Offline coupling of LSMs with MODFLOW investigated using multi-estimates of recharge.•MODFLOW, in the absence of calibration, could benefit from being forced by LSMs.•Calibrated MODFLOW models can be used as the base model for offline/dynamic coupling.•Coupling to MODFLOW could lead to substantially improved LSMs groundwater simulation.
