•Ethylene glycol is selected as appropriate solvent to separate cyclohexane and benzene.•Extractive distillation process is simulated using ethylene glycol as solvent in Aspen Plus V9®.•Cyclohexane and benzene with purities of 99.93 mol% and 99.94 mol% are obtained.
