•Assessment of PTSD in people with dementia may be difficult and requires careful evaluation of all present symptoms.•The TRADE-interview can be helpful in diagnosing PTSD.•Differentiation of PTSD symptoms from other symptoms can be facilitated by using clinical diagnostic instruments based on informant and observational information.
