Investigation of Dual Three-Phase Permanent Magnet Machines with Different Modular Windings

Modular windings can be potentially applied into dual three-phase (DTP) permanent magnet (PM) machines with 0° angle displacement, based on which the two three-phase winding sets can be physically segregated to enhance the physical, electromagnetic, and thermal isolations between them. In this paper, the winding boundary conditions are investigated, and it is found that distinct modular windings can be obtained via different winding boundary conditions, leading to different fault-tolerant performances. Based on theoretical analysis and two-dimensional finite element simulation, the key electromagnetic performances of two typical cases with different winding boundary conditions are evaluated under both healthy and fault conditions. It is revealed that the different winding boundary conditions contribute to different inductance characteristics, torque performances and fault currents.
