•Mettl14 inactivation in murine epidermis led to transient thicker epidermis and exhaustion of the epidermal stem cell pool.•Mettl14 inactivation led to a junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB)-like phenotype (dermal-epidermal detachment).•METTL14 may regulate epidermal homeostasis through m6A methylation modifications of Col17a1, Itgβ4 and Itgα6.
