DNA and RNA offer fascinating possibilities for the self-organization of complex patterns, which can be used in various combinations. Since this self-organization occurs at the nanometer scale, it can possibly offer ways for the creation of nanooptical or nanoelectronic devices. Therefore, the quest for conductivity of DNA or RNA has inspired a vast amount of experiments, which have led to a large number of diverse results. In the recent past, a coherent picture has emerged which describes charge transport along DNA or RNA in various environments. Based on this, electronic applications of these biomolecules have been developed.
