Radiation cataract in Heterogeneous Stock mice after γ-ray or HZE ion exposure

摘要
•Large populations of genetically heterogeneous mice (HS/Npt) were exposed to 0.4 Gy of HZE ions or 3 Gy of γ-rays and compared to unirradiated controls.•Prevalence of radiation-associated lens damage was monitored by dilated slit lamp exam for up to 26 months following exposure.•A cataract risk of more than two-fold is observed following 0.4 Gy HZE ion or 3.0 Gy γ-ray exposure compared to unirradiated mice.•Mice at risk for cancer are also at increased risk for cataracts.
