SDR-based 5G NR System Verification with Video Transmission for Wireless Emulator

The Society 5.0 will be strongly assisted by cyberphysical systems (CSP) with collecting various data in a physical space, analyzing them in a cyber space, and actuating physical devices. To harness the full potential of CPS across diverse societal and industrial realms, the establishment of an advanced and robust wireless communication infrastructure is needed. The forthcoming evolution embodied by Beyond 5G (B5G) holds promise for achieving these objectives, while the realization of such technologies requires field trials that are essential for practical implementation. However, as systems become more enhanced and larger in scale, the cost and time for field trials also escalate, making early practical implementation more challenging. The authors are currently developing a wireless emulator that can be used for development and verification of such new technologies in a cyber space. This kind of virtual evaluation and verification platform is expected to significantly reduce the time and effort required for field trials, and then, can accelerate R&D of new wireless communication technologies. Furthermore, it can accelerate interference recognition and control technologies and spectrum sharing technologies for the purpose of coexistence with other systems. This paper reports on the developed evaluation environment for 5G NR using software-defined radio (SDR) devices and describes the results of system verification, including a video transmission system.
